Alpacas!

Saturday was the Alpaca Ontario Alpaca Show.   While all other animals are quite obviously evolved, alpacas must be intelligently designed:  they have a communal dung pile.  I wonder if they do their own laundry, too.  I bought myself some alpaca socks and they’re so comfortable I’m never going to take them off.

It was hard to take good pictures (we were segregated from the alpacas and there wasn’t really enough light for the long zoom)  but there are a couple below the fold.

Bike Train Ontario

April 17, 2009

Hooray, not only is the  Bike Train to Niagara Falls running again this summer (it’s been running for a couple of years but for some silly reason I haven’t taken it yet), but they’ve added a route to North Bay as well!    It would be a fun few days to take the train up north and ride home.

Paris To Ancaster Bicycle Race

April 10, 2009

Here’s another semi–local Paris-Roubaix inspired dirt road race that I’m probably not going to ride:   Paris To Ancaster Bicycle Race

For over a century the roads of northern Europe have been home to the toughest bicycle races in the world. The most famous of these, Paris to Roubaix, takes place each spring over brutal cobblestone roads that have been preserved in their historic condition for over 100 years. Inspired by this classic race, the Fuji Bicycles Paris to Ancaster has taken place for the past sixteen years over the roughest farm lanes, trails and gravel roads we can find.

Durn it, If I’d known about all these spring dirt road races maybe I wouldn’t have got myself so out of shape over the winter (XC skiing and 8 mile walks are fun, but they don’t do much for your bike legs;  poutine and playing Thief 2 fan missions do even less).   Actually this one looks flatter and less tortuous than this weekend’s Hell of the North, but it’s the same weekend as the alpaca festival.
